Canon Abilities: Vex’s Ability sectionRole: Legend
Role Qualities/Attributes: Retractable wings, of a golden-green hue that resemble sun-dappled tree tops, allowing her to fly since she doesn’t have her broom;
Role Reasoning: Vex’ahlia is a hero of Tal’dorei and Exandria. While she has at times done questionable things, she always strives to help those who are weaker than her. She has dedicated a great deal of her time to saving others, even if it has not a lot of personal reward, but she does like a bit of shiny. While she’s given the title of Grand Mistress of the Grey Hunt by Percival, she takes her duty seriously. She has died twice by her canon point to retrieve items that would help the party destroy the remaining four dragons of the Chroma Conclave. She’s put herself in danger to save members of the party—most dramatically was her saving Grog while flying on her broom in the middle of battle.
★ Personality ★
What was the most traumatic experience your character endured? How did this change them? The most traumatic experience of Vex’s life is probably the time spent in Syngorn. She and Vax lived with their mother the first ten years of their lives and they were loved and loved their mother so deeply. When their father took them away, they were taken to a place where they were ignored, scorned, and treated like dirt for the simple fact their mother was a human while their father was elven nobility. And while she used the education she got from him and his rank, she never forgot the way she was treated there. And as a teen, she and Vax left to go back to their mother, only to find that she’d been killed when the Ancient red dragon, Thordak the Cinder King, attacked. It was then that they both swore revenge against the dragon and dedicated her life and skills to his downfall, while solidifying all the hate she had for her father, Syldor Vessar.
What is the most important and defining relationship(s) in your character's life and why? Vex’s relationships with her twin, her parents, Percy and Vox Machina as a whole define who she really is. Vex has trouble really knowing who she is without the part of her that has always been with her twin brother, Vax’ildan. They’ve done nearly everything together, and even when they fight, they are so intermeshed that it takes them falling in love to really learn to live without one another all the time. The love she has for her mother and the absolute heartbreak that was first her and Vax’s removal from Brydon to Syngorn and then returning to find her mother dead led Vex on the mission that was vengeance and retribution on Thordak, the Cinder King. She also resents and despises her father for taking her and her brother from a loving home with their mother to a place where they were ignored at best and scorned regularly for being half-elves. She acknowledges the education he gave them, but there becomes a point in time where she tells him that she wants nothing to do with him and that if she could return every trace of his blood in her body, she’d do so without a second thought. Percy has brought love and romance into her life, letting her be changed by and to change another for the better. He’s a confidant and lover that she didn’t expect to be worthy of, but he’s shown her that she’s more than she gave herself credit for. Vox Machina as a whole has taught Vex that there’s more to life than hatred and self-preservation.
What does your character feel like they struggle with still? Where could they improve? This could be physically, mentally, emotionally, or otherwise. Vex knows that she still holds grudges and has a hard time forgiving others. It’s why she’s carved the Elven word “Sinaeth” into Fenthras to remind herself to practice forgiveness of others. In fact, she’s the one who also reminds Percy on the regular that they need to forgive others for THEMSELVES. She’s also aware that her reliance on Vax could be used against her, and actually has caused both of them to pledge themselves in the service of The Raven Queen in different aspects, but she’s not sure how to fix it, considering they are twins. Their world has grown outside of just the two of them and she’s sure that it will continue to grow, but Vax is a part of her that she will NEVER give up.
Is your character capable of forgiveness or will they hold a grudge until they die? Would anything ever make them change their mind? See answer to question above. :) But, in truth, Vex is capable of it, but it’s a struggle for her to do so. It wasn’t until she really got a mirror in her face with Saundor in the Feywild that made her rethink a lot of her life. It’s the reason she carved the Elven word to forgive on her bow as a constant reminder that she can still change and forgive others. Between watching the way that hatred swallowed up Saundor in the Feywild, actually poisoning a beautiful section of that plane and the way it nearly took over Percy, she knew she had to try to be less vengeful and she tries her best to make sure the rest of Vox Machina also can come back from hate.
What would your character sacrifice to get what they want or to reach their potential? What have they sacrificed already? Vex has actually given so much for those around her, including pledging to slay a powerful Demon Prince for the Raven Queen to bring her brother back to life. She’s actually died while trying to retrieve on of the Vestiges of Divergence to help slay the dragons of the Chroma Conclave, and then later while fighting Raishan the Deceiver to complete the deaths of all the Conclave and save all of Exandria from the grasp of the five flying monsters. And while she loves money because it gives prestige and power, she knows it won’t last and can do so much good. She would give every last copper in her possession to make sure those she loves are safe and happy.
